21 Mar 2017

Motorcycle taxis are rapidly becoming a popular means of transport in the City of Lights. Not surprising, when you consider how much quicker, cheaper and efficient they are than traditional taxis! More and more professionals in the transport industry are considering it as a viable path. So how do you go about becoming a motorcycle taxi driver? We’re here to help you discover the ins and outs of motorcycle taxi training. Let’s go!

Required training and course for taxi motorcyclists

So you want to become a motorcycle taxi driver but you’re not sure where to start? Don’t panic – we’re here to help. After reading this article, you’ll be an expert on all the professional routes available to become a legally authorized motorcycle taxi. To begin with, to become a motorcycle taxi you must obtain the obligatory permit.

Getting the permit to practice as a taxi motorcyclist

In order to obtain this permit card, you need to fill out an important form called the ‘Formulaire Moto Taxi 2017’ (motorcycle taxi form 2017). You can find this on the website of the prefecture/department where you’d like to work. It can be tricky to find the form online, especially if you’re an English speaker looking to work in France – so your best bet is to follow these steps. Go to the prefecture’s website, and select “section démarches administratives” > “professions reglementées” > “cartes professionnelles”. From there you can then select the option which suits you the best. For example, motorcycle taxis fall under the “chauffeur de véhicule motorisé à deux roues” (2 wheeled vehicle driver) category.
Once you’ve filled out the certificate online, you need to provide an aptitude certificate to show you are fit to begin the profession of a motorcycle taxi driver .

Requirements of becoming a motorcycle taxi

In short, there are three key requirements:

  1. Firstly, as already seen, you must obtain the official permit from your local region/prefecture.
  2. You must then obtain an aptitude certificate from an authorised prefecture doctor to show you are fit to drive.
  3. Lastly, you must own a motorcycle under your name and be able to present all the relevant documents related to its last MOT. Your motorbike must also have a clear sign visible to potential clients.

Becoming a motorcycle taxi: an administrative nightmare?

It’s easy to see that becoming a motorcycle taxi driver is not the most simple route to follow. The number of applicants is increasing day by day, and this makes getting your hands on a permit a lot more difficult – and at times it can seem completely blocked off. Overall, the profession is full of logistical and bureaucratic complications. But, if you’re passionate and patient, becoming a motorcycle taxi driver could be worth waiting a few months for. A last tip: before you invest in your business, make sure you have the permit in your hands!
