Indeed, the city of Rennes has recently launches an application with one goal in mind: to reduce the cost of taxis! Since 5th July 2016, the initiative has been in place. It was mainly started as a means of combatting the arrival of Ubers and private hire vehicles. Taxis needed to find a new approach, and fast. What the application aims to do is to entice new clients into ordering a taxi by a government-funded mobile app which brings all of the taxis together in the city. The app is called “Le Taxi” and uses GPS through clients’ smartphones.

The new app certainly has given the taxi industry a new lease of life – which is exactly what the government aimed to do. So how can you use it? It’s simple, really. You need to download one of the free apps called Mon Appli Taxi, Taxiloc or Zaléou. It doesn’t matter which one you choose – the concept is exactly the same. Once you’ve downloaded the app, a map of taxis in Rennes will be available for you to see on your phone, clearly indicating all of the taxis nearby. You can easily book a taxi in Rennes and even select special options like choice of vehicle.

The advantages of using “Le Taxi” to book a taxi in Rennes

You may still be wondering what some of the main advantages are of using this app to book a taxi in Rennes, especially compared to the more conventional ways. Simply put, the Le Taxi app means you don’t have to pay the driver to come and pick you up. This “pick up fee” often costs between €4 and €5 – as usually, the driver will start his meter as soon as he receives the call to pick you up. This means we end up paying for the fare from the minute we make the call right until we arrive at our destination. But, thanks to this new app, you can find the vehicle nearest you, and taking a taxi in Rennes will be on average 5€ cheaper than before. As you can see, there are great savings to be made!

Although this initiative has seen huge success in the city of Rennes, it’s becoming increasingly popular around the whole of France including in Montpellier, La Rochelle and Marseille. According to recent studies, around 600,000 people use taxis in Rennes each year.
