Paris taxis: do they operate during the Paris Marathon?

Is it possible to take a taxi during the Paris Marathon
27 May 2017

Paris offers a huge variety of events each year, it is one of the many reasons why Paris attracts so many visitors. Consequently we have decided to discuss the affects that each of the biggest events and spectacles will have on traffic, so that getting around does not become an issue. Among them the Paris Marathon welcomes around 50,000 runners and no less than 250,000 spectators every year. The total number of kilometres run by the attendees comes to around 1,632,524! We aren’t trying to put you off taking this physical challenge (even if the size of the figure of total kilometres run might be discouraging to some) but simply to let you know how our friends the Paris taxis will operate during such a popular and spread out event. So it is here that you will discover the districts where taxis are available and those that are blocked off by security fences.

Taxis in Paris: planning ahead for the marathon

So seeing as an enormous amount of people have been asking questions regarding the circulation of Parisian taxis during the Paris Marathon, we have decided to put all the most important information into this article. The 26th ‘Marathon de Paris’ will take place on the 9th of April 2017. It is unavoidable that this 42 kilometre race necessitates a secure perimeter and road closures which can directly affect you when taking a taxi in Paris. Despite the need to shut off roads the event is incredibly well organised and planned out to the most minute of detail so it is still possible to get around the French capital using the roads during the event. Planning ahead is highly advised however and booking a taxi in advance is highly recommended.

Parisian taxis: how do they operate differently during the marathon?

So there it is, the question that everyone is asking at the moment: how do the taxis in Paris operate differently during the event? The first thing to know is that although possible, taking a taxi in Paris during the marathon is rather ambitious. If there is any alternative that you could use it might be worth considering, for example it might be time to open up the garage and dust off your scooter, bicycle or skateboard! If you don’t have such a mode of transport at hand there is also the option of using the public bicycle service Vélib which might be more effort but could potentially be quicker than a taxi in Paris in such circumstances. A bit of forward thinking never goes amiss though and if, while planning your journey, you have a look at the map of the marathon and see that the route does not coincide with where you want to go to and from then the taxis will be operating as per usual, all be it that there might be slower moving traffic on the roads.

Ordering a taxi in Paris during the marathon

The route of the Marathon starts from the Champs-Elysées and heads towards La Bastille, then Porte de Vincennes and next the Bois de Vincennes. It will then once again pass the Place de la Bastille before joining the Berges de la Seine, then the Bois de Boulogne, the Porte d’Auteuil and the finally finish at the Avenue Foch, where traffic will be stopped between 3-o-clock and 8:30pm. As you will see although the route is long it does not affect all of Paris, and is concentrated within the centre of the city. Therefore if you are ordering a taxi during the marathon on the outskirts of town everything should be as usual. The best thing to do if you still aren’t sure is to speak directly to a taxi company in Paris, tell them the route you need to take and the time and they will be able to tell you if it will be possible or not.
