Book an environmentally friendly taxi: going green from A to B

How to book a green taxi
11 Mar 2017

The taxi is and will continue to be one of the most comfortable and least restrictive forms of transport. No need to spend huge sums of money on M.O.T.s and repairs, no need to spend 40 minutes looking for a parking space, no need even for a driving licence but still with the ability to go wherever you want, whenever you want. However taxis that run on fossil fuels also contribute to the pollution of our planet, which is not good. It is for this reason that we are going to look in more detail into the hybrid taxis and alike. Before going fully green it seems that hybrids are an ecological compromise that are set to make their mark on the French auto mobile landscape. So what are the tricks for ordering an environmentally friendly taxi, what are the advantages, prices, etc… answers coming right up!

Hybrid taxis: their brief history

Many people don’t realise that eco taxis exist and have existed for around 11 years now. The appearance on the market of hybrid taxis is an innovation that we can thank our friends in London for. The first eco hybrid taxis appeared in London in march 2006. The avant-garde and highly welcome idea of offering a green alternative taxi service came from a company called Green Tomato Cars. Thanks to this innovation it is now possible to order an environmentally friendly taxi elsewhere meaning a reduction of CO2 emissions of up to 50% per journey. It just goes to show that sometimes all it takes is to plant a seed for something superb to grow.

Environmentally friendly taxis: rates and advantages

Following the success of Green Tomato Car’s ecological taxis the company G7 launched its own range of green taxis in October 2007 just over a year later. To incite their taxi drivers to use hybrid taxis the company opened a eco-driving training course with the aim of reducing green house gas emissions of an extra 4%. Since its creation the hybrid taxi company has seen a huge success. Today G7 Green makes over three million journeys per year and has over 3000 vehicles in its eco taxi flotilla which represent around 30% of all the vehicles owned by the company. How this effects the environment is considerable when scaled up to this amount of vehicles on the road, it is estimated that these actions have reduced the CO2 emissions by around 25%. As with a regular taxi ordering an environmentally friendly taxi can be done using a smartphone app, over the phone or on the company’s website. As for the rates for the journeys these should not alter at all from what you would pay for a regular taxi.

Booking an eco taxi: an encouraging initiative for the city of Paris

Following this green wave and the paradigm shift towards the protection of the environment, the city of Paris decided to encourage the deployment of green taxis by launching a subsidy of 3000€ for all the buyers of hybrid vehicles. The only condition condition for the subsidy is the amount of CO2 given off per kilometre. A ecological vehicle must not emit more than 120g of CO2 per km.
