What will the taxi of the future be like?

What will the taxi of the future be like
09 Jan 2017

With the progression of science and communications technology we will soon witness a revolution on our roads with ‘connected vehicles‘. But what will a taxi of the future be like? More comfortable, free WIFI, touchless payment and self driving, we try to imagine some likely possibilities for the near future for the taxi of tomorrow.

Taxi of the future : a taxi super-connected

Numerous auto-mobile manufacturers in partnership with telecommunications companies are experimenting with making our vehicles more and more connected. The taxi of tomorrow will also have evolved with the times and will most certainly be equipped with free onboard WIFI allowing customers to stay connected to high speed internet during their journeys. This has already been put in place in certain more modern taxis so it is safe to say that all future taxis will offer this additional service.

Taxi of tomorrow : contactless payment, here before you know it

Contactless payment is currently revolutionising the way we pay for the things we buy. Using your smartphone or bank card makes it now possible to pay for small purchases quickly and simply. This existing technology can already be found in modern taxis that have updated their payment system in recent years and as this payment method becomes more and more commonplace any taxi of tomorrow will almost certainly be equipped with a contactless card reader. Being able to pay the taxi driver directly by smartphone using an app might sound futuristic but this also already exists, so you could say that the taxi of the future is already here!

Connected taxi : screens everywhere

How would you like to spend your time in the taxi watching an episode from your favourite TV series? This will soon be very possible thanks to connected taxis with media on demand and screens embedded in the headrests. Sat comfortably you will be able to use this touchscreen to browse the internet, watch videos or follow the progression of the taxi journey on a GPS map. When taking a taxi of the future you definitely wont get bored!

Self driving taxi : science fiction?

Google, Apple, Tesla, Renault, some of the biggest companies in the world are working on developing the cars of tomorrow and they will be, with out a doubt, self driving. Loaded with highly accurate GPS captors and receptors and equipped with an ultra efficient onboard computer the driverless taxi will be making an appearance before too long. Driverless cars have already been tested in certain cities such as Singapore, therefore we foresee the self driving taxi becoming available in the near future and revolutionising the domain of public transport.

Electric taxis : a more ecologically friendly taxi

We can’t discuss the taxi of the future without mentioning the environmental issues linked to the use of fossil fuels. In short the further a traditional taxi travels the more exhaust fumes it emits and this contributes to the greenhouse effect. However with this now firmly a concern acknowledged globally the use of electric vehicles is becoming a viable alternative sought out by many. Already it is not uncommon for a professional taxi driver to use a hybrid taxi in place of a fully electric taxi. Our prediction is that with improvements year on year into battery life we will be seeing many more electric taxis on the road in the future.
