While the professional world of the taxi driver seems to be undergoing a type of existential crisis tied to the appearance of concepts such as Uber and low cost taxis we will have a look at the salary of taxi drivers and the working conditions. So how much do our valiant chauffeurs with their mythic taxi meters get paid? What are the approximate average wages for taxi drivers? Answers coming right up!

Salary of a taxi driver: the numbers vary according to the situation

Being a taxi driver today still has its merits however the profession is going through a crisis and in time could even become extinct. That is why we are going to discuss the average pay for a taxi driver who currently operates. Like all professions in France the pay of a taxi driver will differ depending on various criteria (working hours, whereabouts, status of the worker). For example the wages of a taxi driver in Paris will not be the same as a taxi driver’s wage in Central France. The number of taxis in France is estimated to be around 60,000 with 20,000 of these operating with in Paris region. Consequently we can safely say a third of all taxis in France operate in the capital.

Average revenue of a taxi driver: variable according to status

The working status of a taxi driver will be one of three forms: rental, artisan or employee. These statuses play a major role in the expected income of a taxi driver. A taxi with the rental status, means that the vehicle is rented b the driver from the operating company along with the taxi licence. The rental charge the driver will pay will come to around 150€ per day but this also means avoiding the need to pay for the car or any necessary repairs. The artisan status means the driver has their own licence validated by the town council (generally within the 10 years following the demand) or bought from another taxi driver who wanted to sell it for whatever reason. On average the price of a taxi licence is between 30,000 and 300,000€. No you’re not imagining it and neither is that a typo! The final status is that of an employee of a taxi company, which comes with the general advantages of being employed rather than being freelance. However none of these statuses can be said to be better than another, each having its own pro’s and con’s and each influencing directly the taxi driver’s pay.

Taxi driver wage: the exact revenues earned

As with all types of profession, regardless of the field of activity, the salaries evolve according to age and the amount of years the employee has been working for the company. In regards to the salary of a taxi driver in France, according to the figures published by INSEE, the average wage is between 1300€ and 3000€ per month. Seven years ago INSEE announced that a taxi driver would earn on average 17,000€ per year, or 1 416€ per month. Concerning the varying statuses of taxi drivers in France the average earnings of a taxi driver are as follows: for an artisan the average would be 3000€ per month, for an employee 1700€ and for a rental operator 1600€. One thing to note is that these figures come from the figures that have been officially declared by taxi drivers, and it should be understood that many taxi drivers will keep some of the cash they earn off the books in order to avoid paying tax. Although not at all legal this practice is widespread as it is hard to control.
