What can parisian taxi drivers refuse and why
21 Feb 2017

What would the famous capital city of France be like without its famous taxis that are used by residents and tourists alike in an infinite number of circumstances. There are however some people, and it is often those that can be a bit unsympathetic or even nasty, that take the taxis in Paris for granted and may even assume that taking a taxi is their god given right. Make no mistake about it however a Parisian taxi driver, or even one from elsewhere for that matter, has every right to refuse a client’s demands. You will discover more and to what extent below.

Paris taxis: information about the refusals at the heart of the conflicts

As is often the case with disputes between the general public and Paris taxi companies it is a lack of information known by those who have been refused a taxi service which fuels these arguments. So what are the rights and obligations of taxis in Paris ? What are they obliged to accept, to tolerate or otherwise to refuse ? That is a question that not many people would be able to give a certain and definite reply to. This is why we have decided to give you more information about what taxis can and will reject. To begin with it should be known that for most situations and demands that a taxi can refuse , there is a code of best conduct for taxi drivers to follow. This code was put in place in order to protect the worker’s rights within the profession and will often be cited in the case of any disputes, legal or otherwise.

Paris taxis: what will make them refuse you

Among the situations where a you might be refused by a taxi in Paris the following are the most commonplace: taking somebody aboard along with their pet, or in some extreme cases taking an animal on its own! The exception to this rule is if a blind person wants to travel with their guide dog. However there are certain Paris taxi services that will accept animals but that is their choice and if you are planning on taking a trip with a pet it is best to make this known in advance, at the time of booking. A less obvious and often contested situation is a demand for a long journey that will take the taxi outside of its operating zone. An exception to this rule will often be for a trip to the airport as this is a regularly demanded and a set tariff can be put in place. Even within a taxis operating zone a taxi driver’s rights mean they can refuse a journey during the last half hour of their shift if it takes them in the opposite direction of where they want to be when they finish work. Finally and perhaps most obviously the Parisian taxi driver is within their rights and encouraged to refuse to accept somebody who is too inebriated, especially if this might pose a threat to their personal safety.

Paris taxis: what should be accepted

Having looked at the rights of taxi drivers in Paris and in particular what they have the right to refuse, let us know look at what the are supposed to accept. Good news for you the clients, there are certain demands that must be met and if not you can request a refund. You have the right, and it can often serve you well to know this, to choose the route that you take. This is especially useful if you have the bad luck of being picked up by a dishonest taxi driver who wants to make the journey last longer in order to earn a bit more money. You equally have the right to order a Paris taxi to stop in the middle of the journey to pick up or drop off somebody who is accompanying you on your journey. Finally you have the right as a customer to ask… and remember this one: to choose the radio station. So, music maestro!
