17 Jan 2017

No need to panic, there is a first time for everything and you will see that booking a taxi for your journeys is a lot easier than it may first appear. In order to help we have put together a list of five things to know before you book a taxi for the first time.

Taking a taxi : where to find one

If you have already made the decision and told yourself that “I need a taxi” you are now most likely asking yourself “where can I find a taxi near me?” Easily recognizable you can spot a taxi thanks to the light-up sign on the roof. As a general rule taxi ranks can be found at airports, train stations and in town centres often alongside a hotel.

Taxi prices : the cost of a journey

When taking a taxi for the first time it is important to understand how the pricing system works. The final cost of the journey will depend on the distance travelled as well as other factors but taxi prices are regulated taking into account these three elements:

  • The initial basic minimum charge, a fee that is set each year by the government.
  • The price of a kilometre travelled, which varies depending on the hour of the journey. Taking a taxi at night will be more expensive than during the daytime.
  • The rate charged in the case of traffic jams.

Booking a taxi : peace of mind assured

If you are worried about finding a taxi at the time when you need it for your first ever taxi journey then you should know that it is possible to book a taxi in advance on the internet or you can call a taxi by phone. One thing to know about taking a taxi in this way is that you will often have to pay for the distance that taxi had to travel in order to get to your desired pick up point as well as for the journey itself.

Taxi journey : how to pay

At the end of your first taxi journey you will need to settle up with the taxi driver. If you need a taxi but don’t have any cash on you it is good to know that these days, without exception, all taxi drivers are obliged to accept credit and debit cards as well as cash. All taxis are required to be equipped with a payment terminal that has the ability to print receipts. If you are taking a taxi for the first time you should be reminded that paying by cheque is often refused and that drivers have the right to do so.

First ever taxi journey : the receipt

The receipt otherwise known as the journey report is a document that gives all the information about the taxi journey. It will give the date, the start and end time of the journey, the name of the driver, the vehicle license number as well as the overall price. For any type of journey, by law, the driver when asked for has to give this receipt, and for all journeys where the overall cost is above €25 the receipt is mandatory.
