Taxis subsidized by the state: how to book these services

How to book a medical taxi
18 Apr 2017

Getting a taxi is a a comfortable and quick means of transport for many travellers. It means you can get around easily without the usual problems of parking, filling up on fuel or worrying about your own vehicle. A common question arises about the availability of taxis for disabled people. In order to guarantee comfortable journeys for all, we’ve decided to share some information with you about how to book state-subsidized taxis and make the most of this service.

State-subsidized taxis: how to make the most of this service

In a situation where a handicapped client may want to use a taxi to get around, there are government-funded services in place to help out. In France – and especially in Paris – the city councils have recently made it their goal to improve transport for people with disabilities by guaranteeing easy transport. In the past, there has been criticism that transport is often inaccessible for handicapped people. It has thus become utmost priority in recent years to offer suitable taxi services for all citizens. For example, to reserve a taxi equipped with wheelchair facilities we strongly recommend the French CPAM services (Caisse Primaire d’Assurance Maladie) who you can get in contact with by calling 3646 from a French landline. If not, you can also contact them by email and find out more about how to sort out subsidized taxis for yourself or a member of your family. The cost of these vehicles depends entirely upon your situation and whether you have French health insurance or not. Irrespective of your rights, CPAM is available to answer any questions you may have.

When can I call a subsidized taxi?

The title “state-subsidized taxi” refers to any vehicle authorized by the CPAM (French National Health Insurance). If you are not sure how this system works, or whether you are entitled to a state-subsidized taxi, we can advise that the majority of usages are the following: if you need a taxi to get to or from the hospital, before or after an operation, if you are in the process of being repatriated or if you are attending a medical consultation. For any other situations, you may still be entitled to a government funded taxi – please contact your CPAM to find out more. If your taxi driver refuses to transport you, you may want to consult our article on taxi drivers’ rights to refuse.

Special taxi services: travelling with a wheelchair

Many taxi companies offer a service where you can travel with your wheelchair. These specially designed vehicles are suitable for wheelchair transport and many drivers are specially trained to help disabled people. To find a state-subsidized taxi , you can contact a range of different companies. In Paris, for example, we recommend the company Taxis G7 who specialize in services for handicapped persons.
Taxis G7 offer a 24/7 service for all enquires and bookings. The prices are identical to traditional taxi fares despite the service. In total they have 120 specialised vehicles equipped with ramps to allow easy access. It’s not just in Paris that these services are available, though – taxis for disabled passengers are offered all across France.
