Female taxi drivers: women behind the wheel?

female taxi drivers
25 Feb 2017

In an automobile sector dominated by male drivers and no stranger to misogyny, it is interesting and important to note that more and more female taxi drivers are entering the market. This profession seems to be experiencing a rise in female drivers and could soon lead to a window of opportunity in the global transport sector for women.

Female taxi drivers: a trend just getting off the ground

With a great deal of obstacles along the way, women have worked hard to get their first foot into the door of the transport industry over recent years. Unfortunately, they are faced with huge stereotypes and have a long job ahead of them to debunk these preconceived ideas. These stereotypes start early: a little boy plays with his Lego cars while a girl contents herself with brushing her Barbie’s hair. Clichés such as these are clearly unhelpful and responsible for many women’s hesitation as to whether to enter the sector or not. Having said this, in Europe we are one of the most ‘developed’ cultures, where women can drive – elsewhere they may not even have the right to do so. So despite hesitation, women can and should become female taxi drivers if they so wish. For the moment though, only a pitiful 9% of taxis are driven by women. This figure should continue to rise with the next 10 years.

Female taxi drivers: a minority in France

Driving in Paris is not an easy job. Firstly, there’s the traffic – but another issue is the wide range of unpredictable clients you may pick up. Some studies have shown that customers may even prefer a female taxi driver to a man as they find them to be more reassuring!

Female taxi drivers: safer than men?

It has been noted than some customers believe female taxi driver to be safer and more reassuring than their male counterparts. So much so, that recently a Parisian taxi company made headlines by offering taxi services with exclusively female drivers. An interesting concept called ‘women behind the wheel’, this service only employs women (although they can , of course, take male passengers in their cars).
