Parisian taxis: the most interesting, unusual and downright incredible stories!

Crazy and incredible stories of parisian taxis
23 Feb 2017

A day in the life of a taxi driver is certainly full of surprises. Understandably so – you’re bound to meet a vast array of people and unusual situations when your job involves prowling the streets of Paris! Constantly faced with the hustle and bustle of daily life in the city, Parisian taxi drivers usually have some interesting anecdotes to recount. So let’s hear some of the craziest and most unbelievable stories they have to tell.

The most surprising stories from taxi drivers

It’s impossible to not be curious about what taxi drivers have seen and experienced as a result of this fascinating job. From the hundreds of saucy stories they have to offer, we’ve compiled a list of the most surprising.

Our first taxi driver tells us about his most extravagantly expensive and spectacularly long journey, from Paris to Toulouse – totalling 678km. This trip was made so that a young thirty-someone could meet his girlfriend in the beautiful pink city. “The sun had barely risen and I was just getting back from my night shift, when I saw a young man hurrying towards me to ask for a journey…to Toulouse! No address, just Toulouse. To be honest, I was hesitant at first as I didn’t think I had it in me to drive such a long way. It’s about six and a half hours, so a thirteen-hour journey there and back. But for some reason I was moved by the young man telling me he wanted to see his girlfriend as quickly as possible, so I accepted. I couldn’t really guess the price of the journey, but I knew it would be over €500. During our journey, the guy didn’t stop thanking me. He chatted to me about his relationship and seemed really loved up – I’d never seen that before! After the seven-hour journey, he got out of the car and said “I forgot to say, I’ve only got 4 hours before I need to get back to work. So if you don’t mind waiting, I’ll ride back to Paris with you!” Obviously this suited me just fine as I needed to get some sleep. Eventually we got back on the road and must have spent 13 hours together in total. The cost of the journey was absolutely ridiculous. But I really felt like I bonded with this guy, and he invited me to dinner a few weeks later. It was a really great night and we’ve been friends ever since!”

Taxis in Paris: drivers tell us their stories

From eccentric clients to rude French celebrities and mysterious strangers, after years on the job some stories stick in the heads of taxi drivers more than others. Like, for example, this driver who remembers a very special night when a woman hopped into his car and asked to be taken to a Parisian quarter for dinner with her friends.

“I realised she was pregnant when I saw her get into the car, but I had absolutely no idea this lady’s waters were about to break in my car! At a red light she suddenly asked me to stop and call an ambulance. Obviously I did as she asked and the ambulance arrived 10 minutes later. The lady was driven to hospital and brought her little girl into the world. I went to see her a few days afterwards to give her a present. After all, it was the most surprising passenger I’d had in 18 years!”
